About Batik
Batik is a centuries-old art form practiced throughout Asia, renowned for its intricate patterns and painstaking craftsmanship. While some batik designs are created with block stamps for precision, every Color of Heat batik piece is made entirely by hand, making each one a truly unique, wearable work of art.
Our journey with batik began in 2013, during our very first trip to Thailand. What started as a quest to meet local clothing producers turned into a serendipitous connection with Yong, an artisan whose craft left us in awe.
The meeting happened by chance. After several days of searching with no success, we stopped at a small restaurant for a much-needed break. Will struck up a conversation with the owner, who happened to know someone specializing in batik clothing. Moments later, we found ourselves in the back of a pickup truck, on our way to meet Yong and his family.
At Yong’s studio, we were captivated by the intricate, hand-painted designs. Jeanne, having studied textiles in college, immediately recognized the immense skill required for such artistry. Yong’s family-run studio, where he works alongside his brother, mother, sister-in-law, and cousin, became our first production partner.
For years, Yong’s batik artistry remained a constant source of inspiration. After Kat graduated from FIT, she envisioned expanding Color of Heat’s offerings to include these stunning, hand-painted designs. When we saw the first sample of batik shorts, it was an easy decision to bring these one-of-a-kind pieces to life.
Every batik item in our collection is a testament to the artisan’s skill and the heritage of this timeless craft. Each piece is truly one of a kind, reflecting the care and creativity of the hands that made it.
Batik isn’t just fabric; it’s a story of tradition, craftsmanship, and connection. We’re proud to share this journey with you and offer pieces that embody the beauty and individuality of handmade artistry.
